The Lightbringer Series, by Brent Weeks

A Fantasy Epic That Delivers

The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks is a fantasy epic that was recommended to me by a dear friend who knew my insatiable appetite for sci-fi and fantasy. As a follow-up to several other fantasy reads, I was thrilled to dive into this series and was not disappointed. So should you read the Lightbringer Series next? Well, here’s my humble Lightbringer Series review:

Characters That Steal the Show

The characters are the heart of this series, and none captured my attention more than Teia. Her character arc was fascinating, as she struggled with feelings of isolation but ultimately found strength in herself and in the love she had for those around her. It was a powerful reminder that self-love and sacrifice can coexist.

Unique World-Building and Magic System

One of the standout features of the series is the world-building and unique magic system, which was both complex and easy to grasp. While the character archetypes are not entirely unique to the fantasy genre, the character development made me feel more connected to them, sometimes to the point of frustration or elation.

Themes That Resonate

The pacing of the series was moderate, but the ending was action-packed, providing more glimpses into the secrets of magic and the Seven Satrapies. The themes of finding confidence despite others’ impressions of you resonated deeply, reminding me that our actions can easily reshape people’s perceptions of us.

Writing Style and Memorable Moments

Brent Weeks’ writing style is simple yet not flat, and the occasional unexpected turns in the writing provided a refreshing break from the seriousness of the story. I particularly loved any scene where Kip found his reckless courage in Green and became the Turtle-Bear, or when he dueled Andross at Nine Kings.

A Highly Recommended Read (or Listen!)

Overall, I found The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks to be a fantastic read. I recapped the plot to my wife each evening, and it was intriguing enough that she eventually started reading it herself, despite not being a fantasy book fan. We even enjoyed listening to the audiobook together during long car rides. The characters, plot, and world-building all came together seamlessly to create a memorable and engaging story. I would highly recommend it with an 8/10 rating.
